Biography
Barbara Wirz Ellsworth, music educator, Dalcroze Eurhythmics teacher and pianist, is a native of Zürich, Switzerland. Due to her father's profession she grew up in many countries abroad with her family. In the years 1966-1993 Barbara Ellsworth resided in the area of Cologne and Bonn, Germany. Since 1993 to present she has been living in the US.
- In 1974 she earned a degree in Early Childhood Education
- In 1980 a Masters Degree in Dalcroze Euyrhthmics at Musikhochschule Köln, State College of Music in Cologne, Germany
- In 2003 a Masters Degree in Music at Northern Illinois University, where she studied piano performance with Donald Walker and Theodore Edel
- In 2003 she received Certification as Illinois State Music Teacher
for grades K-12
Work experience
Barbara Ellsworth has been teaching piano and Dalcroze Eurhythmics since 1980, and has presented her work in Germany and the US. She possesses extensive experience and profound knowledge in diverse areas of music education. As an independent teacher, she has worked with all age groups in various educational and therapeutic settings, at colleges and universities, for teacher's continuing education programs, psychological counseling programs for children with attention and hyperactivity disorders, for elementary to high school general music classes, and at private music schools. As a clinician, she has recently presented Dalcroze programs at Northern Illinois University, DePaul University Chicago, and for the Chicago Area Music Teacher Association. Currently she teaches piano and general music classes at the Community School of the Arts at Northern Illinois University
She is also an active musician for chamber music, and since 1989 a member of the German Quodlibet Duo for flute and piano. She has performed in the USA with the former Classic Fiddlers of Cologne, a German youth string ensemble with piano. She is the author of Das goldene Karussell (The Golden Carousel), a teaching resource for music education with emphasis on interdisciplinary pedagogy and an introduction to classical music, published in 2001 in German for elementary grades one to four.
